Alterra is the main Dutch centre of expertise on rural areas, employing over 500 staff members. Alterra is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) and combines all expertise on rural areas and their sustainable use, including aspects such as water, wildlife, forests, the environment, soils, landscape, climate and recreation, as well as various other aspects relevant to the development and management of the environment we live in. Alterra engages in strategic and applied research to support policymaking and management at the local, national and international level. This includes innovative and interdisciplinary research on complex problems relating to rural areas, but also the production of readily applicable knowledge and expertise enabling rapid and adequate solutions to practical problems. The many national and international themes of Alterra's research effort include relations between cities and their surrounding countryside, multiple uses of rural areas, economy and ecology, integrated water management, sustainable agricultural systems, planning for the future, expert systems and modelling, biodiversity, landscape planning and landscape perception, integrated forest management, geo-information and remote sensing, spatial planning of leisure activities, habitat creation in marine and estuarine waters, green belt development and ecological webs, pollution risk assessment, et cetera.
Alterra is coordinator of the FARO EU project.

Marta Pérez-Soba is a senior researcher in the Centre for Geo-Information at Alterra with a PhD on environmental impacts on forest ecosystems. Her present fields of interest are impact of policies on land use changes and sustainable development in the European rural regions. She has broad experience and training in international management of multidisciplinary projects.

Dirk Wascher obtained a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) from the University of Washington (USA) in 1989 where he specialized in GIS analysis of National Parks, Regional Planning.  Dirk Wascher has more than 15 years international experience in landscape ecology.

Obtained a BBSc, PhD, FRSA and is a senior international recognized Landscape Ecologist with over 30 years of experience of land use research. Expert European field botanist and is currently professor of doctoral studies at the Complutense University in Madrid.  He has developed quantitative approaches to vegetation analysis & environmental classification that enables strategic ecological survey to be carried out for large regions. He has been on an IUCN Commission on Sustainable Protection and was awarded a Gold Medal in 1999 for his services to Landscape Ecology, Prague
