Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics - National Research Institute is a leading Polish research institute in the field of sector specific economic science. By virtue of a Council of Ministers decision of October 2004 the Institute gained the status of a national research institute and since 1 January 2005 it operates under the present name. The Institute is an independent scientific research centre supervised by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Institute is authorised to grant the academic titles of “doctor” and “assistant professor” (Dr. hab.) in economic sciences. The Institute employs 150 persons, including: 10 professors, 3 assistant professors, 26 doctors, 16 assistants and 6 technical research specialists. The scientific and research work conducted at the Institute is focused on key issues of the economic, production and social situation of rural areas in Poland, agriculture and broadly conceived food economy. Analytical studies and forecasts of the Institute address the changes in the development of food economy and the supply-demand situation on the markets for agricultural and food products, as well as inputs required for farming, the effects of Poland’s membership of the European Union, and also the position of Polish agriculture on the single European market, the utilisation of structural funds, the assessment of competitiveness of agricultural and food products on foreign markets, the economics of farm holdings and of the food processing industry, the effects of ownership and structural transformations, regional aspects of the food economy, as well as social and demographic changes in rural areas. The Institute collaborates with numerous Polish and foreign academic centres, with central and local administration bodies, as well as representatives of business and social stakeholders. The most important orientations of the research and development work conducted at the Institute comprise its statutory scientific activities, research conducted within the scope of the Multi-Annual Programme, tasks realised under the guise of an FADN Liaison Agency, as well as national and international research projects.
