Neil Ward is currently Director of CRE and Professor of Rural and Regional Development at Newcastle University.  He has worked on numerous rural policy research projects for national and local government, regional development agencies, statutory countryside bodies and others.  He was seconded to the Prime Minister’s Performance and Innovation Unit in the Cabinet Office to help prepare for the Rural White Paper (2000) and during the 2001 Foot and Mouth crisis he was a emmber of the Government’s Rural Task Force.  He is a leading authority on regional aspects of rural development and scenario analysis for rural futures.

Ranald is Co-Director of Newcastle University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS).  Since joining CURDS in 1992, he has led and worked on a number of studies for a range of European and international organisations, including the OECD, the European Commission, and the European Investment Bank, as well as for UK government at the national, regional and local levels.  Most of this research focuses on peripheral and rural territories.  His research interests cover the implications of developments in information and communication technologies, and the spatial implications of ICT-facilitated changes in the organisation of office work, both in terms of employment location and land-use issues.

After about ten years as Research Manager in CRE, Hilary became a PhD student, studying the provision of computing in Community Centres.    She completed her doctorate early in 2007 and returned to CRE as a post-doctoral Research Associate on the FARO project.  Her research interests include the rural information society, microbusinesses, community organisations and governance.
