The School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh is one of the largest groupings of university-based environmental scientists in Europe, aiming to understand the interaction between the Earth's land, atmosphere, oceans and biosphere as well as the human responses and roles in this complex interplay. With over 100 academic and research specialists and some of the best scientific infrastructure in the UK, we deliver new insights into the dynamics of the Earth System and its relationship with society. We have over 1100 undergraduate and 250 postgraduate students. Building on existing strengths, the School is developing fruitful new collaborations in grand challenge research and greater innovation in teaching and knowledge transfer.

WP4 Coordinator
Mark Rounsevell is Professor of Rural Economy and Sustainability within the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. He is Director of the School’s Centre for the study of Environmental Change and Sustainability (CECS). He has research interests on the effects of environmental and policy change on land use systems, particularly in rural and periurban areas. He has participated in several projects for the European Commission that are developing modelling approaches for the assessment of land use change and the development of future scenarios. This includes ACCELERATES for which he was the coordinator, ATEAM, ALARM, VISTA, FRAGILE and ECOCHANGE. He has contributed as a Lead Author to the IPCC second, third and fourth assessment reports as an expert on scenarios and the International LUCC project.

Marc Metzger is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for the study of Environmental Change and Sustainability (CECS) within the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. He received his PhD from Wageningen University on a multidisciplinary assessment of European vulnerability to global change. He has research interest in global change impacts on ecosystem service provision. He has participated in several European projects, including ATEAM, BioHab, SEAMLESS, and ALTER-Net. He is the secretary of the International Association for Landscape Ecology working group on European monitoring of biodiversity and habitats.
